In the words of our Editor, `Wahoo" for Norfolk's everywhere.
Hearty congratulations to Cruft's Best in Show winner, `Coco", her owners Pam & John Beale, S. Ingram, breeder/owner Elizabeth Matell and her handlers Beth Sweigart and Peter Green.
What a way to round off an outstanding show career with a Best in Show at the world's most prestigious dog show a first for a Norfolk Terrier in the UK.
On April 16th on a beautiful sunny day, some 35 Norfolks and their owners met in Maryland for a day of fun and boy did they have fun!
Sassie and Celine Joiris and their dog Stamp gave an agility demonstration and then worked with some 25 Norfolks and their owners, encouraging them and giving them useful tips along the way. Judging from the response and enthusiasm of all concerned, I have a feeling we'll be seeing more Norfolks in the agility ring soon.
Robin Snyder gave a grooming demonstration, transforming a `hairy' Norfolk into a sleek one all the time explaining what she was doing and why and passing on tips for novice and experienced groomers alike.
After an enjoyable lunch and a shopping spree the ANTA store was very well received then it was on to lure coursing and earthdog practice. The lure course was, as ever, a tremendous success. It would appear at one stage that the llamas in an adjoining field wanted to join in as well!
Richard Reynolds and his assistant then took the dogs and their owners and introduced them to the basics of earthwork. Again, it was a very popular activity. It's nice to know that most Norfolks can still do the job for which they were originally bred.
Whilst all this was going on, 18 Norfolks were taking part in the MVD clinic being conducted by Dr. Luis Braz-Ruivo, thus contributing to the study by Dr. Lahmers which is being funded by the AKC Canine Health Foundation. Unfortunately, the CERF clinic was cancelled due to lack of response.
All in all, this was a busy and enjoyable day. In fact, it was so busy we didn't have time to do the flat racing. A special word of thanks to Drs. Shaw and Dobbins for organizing the MVD clinic and for hosting this event at their beautiful farm.
Thank you to all the helpers and participants at this and other events this year; I look forward to seeing you at a future event.
