Ch. Reidmar Mercator passed away due to lymphatic cancer last October at age 15. Mercator, bred by Nat LaMar, was by Ch. Heathjul Christmas Robin out of Ch. Chidley Charm. He was my first dog ever and proved a devoted friend. Mercator achieved greater success in the ring than I could imagine. Handled by Richard Powell, this sturdy dog gained his championship rather quickly, then had a fine career as a Special.
Mercator was the number 5 Norfolk in the country in 1991 and 1992. He amassed over 40 Best of Breed awards, including the NNTC's supported entry at Bucks County Kennel Club in 1991. Although he was never bred to a champion bitch, Mercator nonetheless produced six champions to date. His descendants include some of the top Norfolk in the country during the past nine years.
Mercator was much more than an attractive Norfolk. He had an eerie, almost human gestalt. Fiercely independent yet devoted, I could count on coming home and seeing his head pop up at the window as soon as I got out of the car. He had an endearing charm that captured the hearts of those who knew him. I called him my `Will Rogers dog' as he never met someone that he didn't like.
Although now gone his legacy lives on in his descendants, my kennel affix, and future offspring as sufficient frozen sperm from him is being stored. He was, as one of his admirers said, a fine little man.
