ANTA notes the passing of long-time member Esther H. Macomber of Newburyport, MA, who died on March 16, 2007.
Esther was a lovely woman and a gracious hostess. She invited ANTA members to gather at her home on several occasions and she entertained with an ease and panache that betrayed her attention to every detail.
Born in 1913, she was a graduate of Walpole High School, attended Wheaton College, and studied at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston where she obtained a certificate from the Language Training Program.
In 1945 she moved to Newburyport when her husband, the late Blair R. Macomber, became the secretary and treasurer of Towle Manufacturing Company. She tutored Newburyport children with language disabilities for many years and conducted training on language disabilities for Newburyport Public School Teachers.
Her community activities are almost too numerous to mention, but they included volunteer work at the Red Acre Hearing Dog Center in Stow, MA, and serving on the executive board of the North Shore Kennel Club. In addition to being an active member in many dog clubs, including ANTA, she was also a regional representative of the American Donkey and Mule Society.
Mrs. Macomber was a world traveler with a special interest in Kenya. She was an active member of the Greater Newburyport-Bura Alliance and Amesbury for Africa, hosting many visitors from Kenya in her home.
ANTA sends condolences to her survivors, including two granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.
