We are pleased to announce that Gina Dorkins will be our judge at the
2009 Fall Festival which will be held in Montgomery, NY, on October 10 and
11. She is the daughter of our 2004 judge, Dorothy Dorkins and she made
such a positive impression during her first visit with us that we've asked
her back in an 'official' role.
From Gina: "Born into Dogs, I have lived with dogs all my life and
began handling from an early age. As a member of both the Kennel Club (UK)
Junior Organisation and Junior Handling Association, I competed in Junior
Handling and Stakes Classes with both Norfolk and Lakeland Terriers with
some success.
I have stewarded many times at both Open and Championship shows and am currently
on the committee of the Liverpool Terrier Club and the Norfolk Terrier Club
of Great Britain where I coordinate the Norfolk Club's junior membership.
I have judged a variety of terriers at local Open shows and Norfolk Terriers
at Leeds Championship Show without CCs and a number of Open shows including
the Norfolk Terrier Club of Great Britain Spring Open Show in 2005 and the
Midland Counties Norfolk Terrier Association Autumn Open Show in 2008."
In addition to attending and passing a Norfolk and Norwich Terrier Judging
Seminar and Assessment, Gina has attended and passed the following Kennel
Club seminars: Requirements of a dog show judge, conformation & movement,
and conformation & movement hands on assessment.
She says, "I am extremely honoured to be asked to judge at ANTA's Fall
Festival later this year and am really looking forward to the appointment."
We, in turn, are looking forward to having this knowledgeable young judge
with us.
As the date gets closer we will be announcing more details. An expanded
committee has been enlisted to organize the event this year, although we
are not sure how they can improve on the efforts of our former chair-person-in-chief,
Cathie Heimbach. Cathie assures us, however, that the committee members
are up to the challenge.

Winning dogs had a distinctly international flair with roots in Australia, Canada and the USA.
Winning Best in Show Honors was Judith Felton's homebred bitch Jufelt's Lady in Waiting (Ch. Jotruba Ah Em William (Aust.) x Ch. Jufelt's Point Maid)
Best Puppy in show was Final Lea Click It or Ticket, bred and owned by Jane Dubin and Lori Pelletier (Ch. Ben Kelev Poker Chip x Final Lea First Class Ticket)
Winner of the Biffin of Beaufin
Dog Stake was Carol Falk's
homebred Ben Kelev's AmBdaCh Ben
Kelev's Place Your Bet (Ch. Ben Kelev's Poker Chip x Ch. Ben Kelev's Inherit
the Wind)
Winner of the Merry of Beaufin Bitch Stake was Canadian owners Linda and Peter Dowdle's Dralion's Lucy in the Sky (Ch. Abbedale's Leopold x Dralion Dynamic Dreamer)
A bloody bar fight, police called to
the scene, a depleted kitchen staff and an interminable wait for our meals
(mediocre, at best) and the 2009 Fall Festival was not off go a great start
Friday evening, October 9. New owners couldn't begin to duplicate last year's
successful dinner at Pazzo's Grill.
Saturday morning, though, things were much better with wet grass but no
rain.
Lots of people, many Norfolks, a number of enthusiastic children, and Gina
Dorkins, a young judge from England, all helped get our match off to a great
start. Our steward-for-life, Jim Zabawa, kept things moving at a perfect
pace.
After the match, president Lori Pelletier opened the annual meeting and
reported our treasury contains over $30,000 and that our raffle for Norfolk-themed
pottery raised over $1300. She further reported that the by-law change ballot
passed 150 in favor; 1 against, thus eliminating the one year waiting period
to join ANTA.
In other items of interest, Lori asked members to give some thought to hosting
ANTA events in their neighborhoods, and she also thanked Ed Plummer who
for many years has done so much for the club. She commented that it has
taken three people to do the job Ed once did alone. From all of us at ANTA:
"Thanks, Ed!"
Carol Falk reported on the continuing work to find a cure for Mitral Valve
Disease and she reported that ANTA members have been leaders in funding
research to find a cure for this disease. Sunday morning's chill quickly
woke up dogs and people and caused a run on hot drinks for breakfast.
Sassie and Celine Jouris ran a well organized and fun agility course. Peggy
Metcalf and Lini Federici had the usual line awaiting their turns at the
earthdog tunnels. Robert Lachman smoothly ran the lure coursing while Lori
Pelletier attracted a crowd for her grooming demo. Bob and Elayne Hill introduced
a new format for the flat racing event and provided unobtrusive snow fencing
to line the sides of the run. Finally, no more escaping dogs!
Winner of the puppy class was Peggy Metcalf's Berry who did a great job
on her first outing. In the adult class, Marina and Petros Sabatacakis'
Mr. Black (Regency's Reverend Mr Black), also a novice racer, took top honors
in a very fast group of contestants.
Mr. Black was also thoughtful enough to return to the starting gate after
each race heat with the lure in his mouth ... a first in flat racing!
During lunch on Sunday, the Blau's name was drawn as winners of the raffle
and silent auction winners were called upon to claim their prizes.
Tired owners and exhausted Norfolks headed for home around 2:30, already
looking forward to next year.
A big thank you for their help to Harry and Sue Owen, Lou Heimbach, Sue
Kleemeyer, Jill Martin, Liddy Baker, Henrietta Lachman, Carol Falk, Mary
Ellen Wigmore, Betsy Bliss, Jim Covey, Jim Zabawa and the many other wonderful
volunteers who stepped forward with offers of assistance.
The Fall Festival is a great combination of hard work, good times, and happy
Norfolks ... all made possible through volunteer efforts.
