ANTA FALL FESTIVAL
OCTOBER 11-12, 2008 -- MONTGOMERY, NY

The Norfolk world was shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Kathleen Eimil on Friday, August 8, 2008.

A tribute to her appeared in the September, 2008, issue of ANTA's newsletter, ANTIC, and in the In Memoriam, People section of the Articles Index on this website.

Sandra Stemmler of Barnstable Norfolk/Norwich Terriers has graciously agreed on short notice to assume judging responsibilities at this year's Fall Festival.

It may seem like Summer has just arrived, but The Fall Festival is fast approaching. Circle the dates on your calendar and begin making plans to join us in Montgomery, NY this year.

Among the highlights ...

Our judge will be Kathleen Eimil from California. A long-time Norfolk breeder under the Mayfair prefix, Kathy has bred many beautiful dogs over the years and we are pleased she will be with us in October.

Exciting one of a kind Norfolk-themed prizes for the match and flat racing.

Unique Norfolk raffle prize.

In addition to the Super 8, two new motels with rooms available for pets.

The return of our old-fashioned auction.

Agility, go-to-ground, grooming, lure-coursing and our revamped flat racing.

Annual meeting on Saturday, with the installation of new officers and board members.

Delicious home-baked breakfast treats and desserts. Back by popular demand, salads for the lunches on both days.

AND our Saturday night banquet always a top-notch affair.

As always the Fall Festival means lots of activities, lots of people, lots of food and best of all lots and lots of Norfolks!

Doppler testing will be available to dogs that have been pre-registered; maximum number of dogs is 20 with appointments available between 8:00 a.m. and 2:40 p.m. When making appointments, please specify the time you desire and every effort will be made to accommodate your request. Payment must accompany your reservation request and a waiting list will be kept when all time-slots are filled.

For those wishing to register their dogs with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), forms may be filled out in advance by downloading them from the website at www.offa.org. Although OFA registration is not required, we strongly urge everyone to report their dog's results.

"Catcher you've just won your first agility titles are you going to celebrate at Disney World?" "No way! I'm going to the Fall Festival in Montgomery, NY. Which way do I go? Where is it? Are you gonna be there? I hear it's fun, fun, fun! Where's New York, anyway?"

BEAUTIFUL FALL WEEKEND = WONDERFUL FALL FESTIVAL

The person responsible for ordering the weather for this year's Fall Festival couldn't have done a better job and the results translated into one of the best events in recent memory. That's saying something, as Cathie and Lou Heimbach and Sue and Harry Owen (and their band of intrepid helpers) have set the bar pretty high to begin with.

Match Judge Sandra Stemmler came from St. Louis and she did a terrific job. Her entry numbered over 50 dogs and by her own admission she had a difficult time selecting one over the other. The show ring was decorated with colorful and cleverly painted pumpkins, provided by Harry Owen. ANTA's Steward-for-Life Jim Zabawa kept things moving with his characteristic blend of charm and good humor.

The Judge's pick for Best in Show was the Merry of Beaufin Stakes winner, Avalon's First Glisten of Abbedale (Ch. Avalon's First Step x Ch. Abbedale's Glitter). Bred by Joan Eckert and Lori Pelletier, she is owned by Lori.

A close second choice and the dog selected Best Opposite Sex was the Biffin of Beaufin Stakes winner, Am. Bda. Ch Ben Kelev's Place Your Bet (Ch. Ben Kelev's Poker Chip x Ch. Ben Kelev's Inherit the Wind). Dealer was handled by his breeder/owner, Carol Falk.

Giving the big kids a run for their money was Best Puppy, Conaire Liberty (Ch. Abershan Tom Sawyer x Conaire Cracker Jax) who was bred by his owner, Joanne Condron.

Best Adult in Match was the 13 ½ year old Ch. Ben Kelev's Good Time Charlie (Ch. Maxwell's Will be Good x Ch. Sheer Bliss Sylvia Ben Kelev) who came from the Veteran Dog class. Bred by Carol Falk and owned by Lori Pelletier, Charlie was nothing short of spectacular. Looking half his age and sporting the confident air of the champion he is, this veteran was deserving of the applause he garnered.

Following the match, out-going ANTA president Judith Felton called the annual meeting to order. She thanked everyone for her eight years as president and turned the proceedings over to newly elected president, Lori Pelletier. Lori remarked that the strength of our club depends on the spirit of its members and indicated that we will have multiple events ahead of us in 2009.

Dinner at the Arboretum was delicious, as usual, and festive fall decorations further defined the atmosphere that was frequently punctuated by laughter. Judge Sandra Stemmler was thanked not only for doing a superb job in the ring, but for stepping in to replace Kathleen Eimil, who passed away unexpectedly this Fall.

At 8:00 on Sunday, Dr. Jean Paul Petrie was set up and ready to start the heart clinic which was organized by Sheila Foran. Twenty Norfolks were signed up and each was given a thorough Doppler exam by Dr. Petrie.

While the clinic was going on, Sassie and Celine Joiris had their usual enthusiastic crowd of dogs and owners at the agility run throughs, as did Peggy Metcalf and Lini Federici at the earthdog tunnels.

Lori Pelletier had a large crowd around her as she did her informative grooming demo, complete with a question and answer session.

Our lunch break included an auction of Norfolk items where Jim Covey and Jim Zabawa played the roles of auctioneer and auctioneer-helper. They made the bidding fun and competitive and the fund raising successful and painless.

Following lunch, Robert Lachman ran the lure coursing and Bob Hill was in charge of flat racing. This year's "Best Adult Racer" was Donna O'Hara's Bosun, while Mary Ellen Wigmore's Hunter won the puppy division.

Event organizer Cathie Heimbach gave credit to the perfect weather and her band of hearty volunteers for the success of the Fall Festival, and she certainly has most of it right. Cathie, however, seldom gives herself enough credit and ANTA thanks her for the pivotal role she plays in making this gathering a success year after year. So, "Thanks, Cathie. Well done!"

FALL FESTIVAL 2008 ... A PHOTO ESSAY BY SUE OWEN

The "lady with the camera" was at it again and she captured many of the sights that make any gathering of Norfolk owners a success. Sue was `everywhere' with her camera throughout the weekend.
