ABOUT SUBMITTING IMAGES

Posting images that are appealing to the web site visitor requires that certain considerations be respected. As with any photograph, it is desirable for the subject of the picture to be as large as practical in the shot, as well as being in focus, well lit, and with good contrast. However, on the internet there are some important trade offs. For one, larger images mean longer waits for images to appear. And, for another, web surfers use various screen settings, which means that an image that just fills one viewer's monitor may be too large or too small for another's. These trade offs lead to a variety of editorial policies for this web site.

The preferred format for photographs is JPG (or JPEG). For black & white drawings and other nonphotographic images with only a few colors, GIF may be more suitable. We can receive and convert a variety of image formats but please check with us first. JPG and GIF images utilize compression techniques that reduce file size by perhaps ten times. Useful BMP, TIF and other formats can easily involve file sizes of ½ MB or more, and several of these at one time could clog our mail box. In fact, any single e-mail of 10 MB will bounce. When submitting a large number of files or very large files, consider burning them onto a CD and sending that. Unfortunately the webmaster does not yet have broadband available and must make do with a dial-up internet connection.

INFORMATION TO INCLUDE

Include as much as possible of the following:

Dog's registered name
Dog's call name
Registered names of sire and dam
Names of breeder and owner

And please consider copyright issues. Unless you, as submitter, are the photographer or the artist, then there likely is a question of permission to use the images.

IMAGE SIZE AND RESOLUTION

It is desirable to minimize file space and download time. Resolution need be no higher than 75 dpi for the internet as this is the limit for many monitors. Image size on a web page is determined solely by the number of pixels in the image and we have adopted a maximum image size of 600 pixels wide and 400 pixels high so that the images will not exceed a single browser screen for most viewers.

600 x 400 pixels is the size limit for the final image. We can and do crop submitted photos to concentrate on the subject matter of the photo. Therefore, it is useful if the submitted image is appropriately larger than 600 x 400 in those cases where the photo is not a "tight" shot.

When scanning a photo, to determine what size to select, take the larger dimension of the photo and divide the pixel limit for that dimension by your resolution setting. For example, for a picture wider than it is tall, take the 600 pixel width limit and divide by your resolution setting of, say 75 dpi (many scanners default to 75 dpi for photos), which equals 8.0 inches (the same picture scanned at 150 dpi but set to 4.0 inches produces the same 600 total pixels). If the picture is not a "tight" shot of the dogs, scan to a larger size to permit us to crop for better effect.

Original, un-resized picture files from digital cameras of 3 Megapixels and greater often represent 2000 or more pixels in width. While these large files allow editorial flexibility, including producing fine print images, they are not appropriate for sending via e-mail; consider submitting on CD.

Write anta@norfolkterrier.org if you have any questions.
