DOG SHOWS

Dog Shows, Bert Morgan

For those interested in the history behind dog shows, this photographic collection is a "must have". It has been out for several years and "captures all the nostalgic charm and glamour of the society dog shows of the 1930's and 1940's, when both dogs and owners were at their dapper best."

EARTHDOG

Earthdog Ins and Outs, Guiding Natural Instincts for Success in Earthdog Tests and Den Trials, Jo Ann Frier-Murza
Signed copies available at the author's web site.
Review by Sheila Foran, ANTIC, September, 1999:

Jo Ann Frier-Murza has written a comprehensive book that should be of interest to all Terrier lovers, whether or not they've ever actually participated in earthdog trials.
From her early chapters dealing with the definition of an earthdog and the history of artificial den trials in the US, through to her detailed descriptions of the breeds associated with earthdog activities and her line drawings of various tunnel designs, the book is packed full of interesting information. Each breed is given its due, with a full history accompanied by photographs of the dogs in action.
Norfolk Terriers are well represented by photos of Ch. Chidley Major G, JE, CG, who is owned by Richard and Cheryl Reynolds. In addition, Sue Ely (Norfolk) and Kate Kenny (Norwich) are given ample opportunity to talk about their respective breeds.
I was particularly impressed with the good, sound advice Frier-Murza gives for selecting and training a potential competitor. Photographs throughout are great from the simply cute to the historical to the instructive. Just about anything you would ever want to know about competing in or putting on a trial is included in the book and there's lots of good, sound "dog advice" on virtually every page.
If you buy this book, you'll have made a valuable addition to your canine library.

Rats -- Observations on the History & Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants. Robert Sullivan.
Reviewed ANTIC, December, 2004

A book about rats might seem an odd addition to the average dog lover's library, but not if you own a terrier. Rats -- Observations on the History & Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants, by Robert Sullivan, is the story of Rattus norvegicus, AKA the Norway or brown rat which inhabits underground New York City in alarming numbers.
As the dust jacket promises, "Behold the rat, dirty and disgusting! Robert Sullivan turns the lowly rat into the star of the most perversely intriguing and elegant book of the year."
Published by Bloomsbury and available through major bookstores, this is the story of one man's study of the seemingly mundane and it also offers a fascinating history of New York City. While dogs are never the focus of this book, the profile of Kit Burns and his rat-fighting dogs is particularly interesting if just a tad gruesome.

HEALTH AND FITNESS

Angell Memorial Book of Wellness & Preventive Dog Care, Darlene Arden

Outlines a preventive care program for all puppy and dog owners. Topics include: dentistry, grooming, nutrition, emergencies, surgery, first-aid, vaccinations, training and behavior, and caring for middle-aged and older dogs. This is an excellent all-around book that is easy to understand, even for beginners. A good source of information for new puppy purchasers, this book is written clearly and with a nice sense of practicallity and humor.

Peak Performance -- Coaching the Canine Athlete, M. Christine Zink, DVD, PhD
Review by Sheila Foran, ANTIC, June, 2002

While most of us may not think of our dogs as being "athletes" (or of ourselves as being particularly athletic) more and more Norfolks are being encouraged to participate in decidedly athletic endeavors. While life in the show ring requires conditioning, it is activities such as obedience, agility, and yes, even earthdog trials, that can be really rigorous for our dogs. Even though titles are not involved, running after the lure or on the flat at fun events also requires a great expenditure of energy that can be a shock to the systems of normally sedentary housedogs.
Chris Zink's book, while not new, is nonetheless an informative review of the preparation necessary to keep dogs in top condition. While much of the information is pretty basic, her chapters on diet and exercise, conditioning, performance-related injuries and problems that affect performance are particularly relevant.
Published by Canine Sports Productions, this volume is also available through Dogwise (http://www.dogwise.com) and other "doggy" book outlets.

HISTORY

Woof ... the Story of a Jones Terrier Who Chased Grizzly Bears, John M. Holzworth

A small gem if you can find it through a used book dealer. It was orginally published in 1933, but was reprinted privately by the late Mary B. Hewes in 1967. Mrs. Hewes was a lovely, charming lady who was an early champion of "Jones Terriers".

NEW OWNER

How To Be Your Dogs Best Friend, The Monks of New Skete

How To Raise a Puppy You Can Live With, Clarice Rutherford and David H. Neill

Play Training Your Dog, Patricia Gail Burnham

The Norfolk Terrier, Joan R. Read (Available from ANTA)

OBEDIENCE

Competitive Obedience Training for the Small Dog, Barbara Cecil and Gerianne Darnell, 1994, T9E Publishing, Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Review by Sheila Foran, ANTIC, September, 1999:

These ladies know what they're talking about in this common-sense look at obedience training. The book is comprehensive and very readable and full of practical tips. They train Papillon's (the Border Collies of the Toy Group) so they really understand what it's like to work with the little guys.

TRAINING

Building Blocks for Performance, Bobbie Anderson.
Reviewed ANTIC, December, 2004

On a more traditional note, Bobbie Anderson's Building Blocks for Performance is a great addition to your collection of training books. Although it is intended to aid people who are starting their puppies in competition, the book offers lots of interesting ideas that can be used with dogs of any age.
The overall intention of the book is to assist owners in building relationships with their dogs that will stand them in good stead in a variety of competitive situations including obedience, agility, and tracking, as well as offering tips to make any dog easier to live with.
Of primary importance is establishing a positive relationship where a puppy learns to enjoy working with its owner. No dog is going to excel in any sport if it doesn't want to be there, and Anderson gives step-by-step instructions for building trust, confidence and a "let's go get `em!" attitude.
Although the focus is on positive training, including the use of food and toys, the author also stresses the importance of making sure your dog knows who is in charge and that's you, not the dog! Building Blocks for Performance is available from Dogwise (www.dogwise.com) and Clean Run Productions (www.cleanrun.com).
